5 Austin Companies that are Rethinking What It Means to be Socially Responsible

Accruent, a past Startup Games team, headquartered in Austin has a history of giving back to the local communities where their employees live and work. In 2015, they donated over $70,000 to charities across the U.S., Canada, and abroad. To incorporate all employees in these charitable giving events, Accruent offers volunteer time off, plan the events during business hours, and their events are run by an employee committee who are responsible for planning quarterly events and handling donations.

Their 2015 AccruentCARES program consisted of their employees serving 20 organizations of one week through 13 service events. They packed 4,350 meals for the Capital Area Food Bank, they repainted bridges and collected waste for Keep Austin Beautiful, and donated food items for the Vaughn Food Bank.

Accruent’s desire to make a positive impact and change the community runs deep within the team. The team gets involved in other mainstream drives such as Movember Foundation that supports prostate cancer research and October’s breast cancer awareness. What’s in store for them this year?

2. Chive Media Group

Chive Media Group, a former Startup Games team, established the nonprofit Chive Charities that supports a unique cause the team in interested in that month. Such causes include people in need of financial assistance, veterans in need of support, etc. Then the team figures out how they can support this cause for the long-term. Chive Charities mission is to raise awareness for their recipient and their cause so they can tell their story. They support individuals with rare medical conditions, veterans with medically-related needs, first responders and emergency assistance organizations, and underfunded special needs education initiatives.

3. BuildASign.com

A past Startup Games team, BuildASign.com, is a leading online custom printing provider of signage and home decor items that fills their calendars with volunteer opportunities and donation drives. The Giving Program, for BuildASign.com, embodies the culture of philanthropy and community support.

The Giving Program awards gifts in the form of discounts and total donations of their products. Their mission is to help reduce operating costs and allow for more funding to support the work that the organizations are meant to do. The organizations they support range from Lemonade Day!, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, Livestrong, Ronald McDonald House Charities, etc. Since 2008, BuildASign.com had donated over $600,000 in donations to more than 500 nonprofits.

4. Mood Media

Mood Media helps brands connect with their customers by providing music, digital signage, hold music, etc. to help their clients create an unforgettable experience for their customers. To give back to the community, Mood Media has paired with Mood Texas to donate 100 new bicycles to Austin Police Operation Blue Santa.

5. Kendra Scott

The Kendra Scott company, a fashion lifestyle-brand based in Austin, established the Kendra Cares Program in which young cancer patients and their caregivers design a custom piece of jewelry. The program has donated over 6,000 pieces of jewelry and has rapid national growth plans to expand into new hospitals.
